Brown marmorated stink bug

Good morning

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) is a major threat to the New Zealand economy and the public. It's high on horticulture's most unwanted list, plant production included.

It's in Asia and Europe, and has aggressively invaded the USA, where its caused millions of dollars of crop damage – rapidly rendering fruit and other produce unsaleable for example. It’s a tremendous public nuisance too, readily invading houses in cooler conditions.

Hitch Hiker Risk - keep an eye out

In winter the stink bug hibernates in sheltered spaces; in buildings and vehicles for example. Thus cargo, containers, vehicle imports, personal luggage and mail are risk pathways for entry into New Zealand, especially from our spring to autumn seasons.

If you've purchased goods that have been recently sourced from Europe, Asia and the US, please check for any sign of BMSB hibernation. This includes personal goods such as items purchased over the internet - see MPI's web-page and fact sheet.
If you find one, or suspect you've found one, catch it, photograph it and call MPI’s Exotic Pests and Diseases hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

Imports from Italy - we need your help

It's frequently detected at the border, and there has been a significant increase in the detections this summer, mostly at the border but some post-border. Of this, about a third were live stink bugs. Of the total detections, 70% were found on tractors, machinery, equipment and other goods from Italy.

Several horticultural industries are working to understand what Italian goods are being imported or processed by our industries.

NZPPI wants to help by identifying what goods are being imported by our industry, or what goods are being purchased by our industry from NZ suppliers that have been sourced from companies in Italy. These could be tractors, machinery, other equipment, netting ... Industry partners will then consolidate the information and make a national approach to the suppliers/importers.

Could you please provide me with the following information for each type of good sourced from Italy that you have purchased or are in the process of purchasing or intend to purchase:

• Product (ie tractor, machine, netting, etc).
• Brand (ie Holland).
• Your NZ supplier/importer (name and key contact details).
• Your Italy supplier (if imported directly) - name and key contact details.
• Whether you have had any discussion with your suppliers about BMSB and if so what the outcome of that discussion was.

Could you please respond (john@nzppi.co.nz) by Tuesday, 7 March 2017

Thanks in anticipation of your help.
