About the Author
Bill Brett was raised on a dairy farm in Taranaki, by enthusiastic gardening parents. He joined Ivon Watkins Ltd as a trainee, took leave of absence to attend Massey University, and returned to Ivon Watkins- Dow as it was then, as a research technician. Bill went on to become the North Island Technical Officer.
After leaving Ivon Watkins-Dow, Bill, spent time in Ministry of Agriculture Bio Security, before joining Yates as the technical officer. Bill was responsible for the 60th Edition re-write of the Yates Garden Guide. He later became manager of the Yates NZ Home Garden Division.
Retail beckoned, and following a brief period with Botanix Garden Centre Group in Auckland, Bill was approached by Mitre 10, to set up and manage the garden division.
Five years later, in 1995 Bill set up Brett & Associates, a garden centre consultancy, and within three years had many clients in NZ, Australia, Ireland and UK. In 2011, Garden Retail Success Ltd, took over the business of Brett & Associates and Bill retired from garden centre consultancy, but still helps with the occasional project.
Bill has always been a keen gardener, and prides himself on being self – sufficient in fruit and vegetables, for 11 months of the year.
Bill was a member of the Nursery & Garden Industry Association board for 12 years and served as president for two years.
Bill has a Diploma of Agriculture, and a Diploma of Education.
